BE BRAVE! The IF Conference

 The IF GATHERING

It has taken me a week to really process the conference I attended last weekend because there was just so much amazing, great, thought provoking information to digest.  This past weekend, I attended a similcast of the the  IF GATHERING conference. (https://ifgathering.com/gatherings/5089/).  To say that it was incredible would be an understatement.  Let me preface this by saying that I have been a Christian since I was eight years old and I have been working "Christian Land" since I was eighteen.  I have been to all the standard issue, status quo women's ministry conferences and this one has been by far my favorite.

The conference had amazing speakers like Christine Caine, Jen Hatmaker, Jo Cochran, Jennie Allen, Ann VosKamp, Angie Smith and more and more incredible, Godly, authentic speakers. I loved it all!  The biggest reason I loved it was because it wasn't about a "Christian celebrity" but about celebrating Jesus Christ and pursuing the amazing plans that HE had planned for us!  To get beyond focusing on ourselves and our junk and turn our focus on how we can change, challenge and make a difference to the generation that is coming behind us!

The following is a few things that I learned and have been trying to process from the conference.

1.  God is good all the time. That means He is good when life is going great and He is good when life is really hard!

2.  Obedience is just step, by step by step. Jesus said, I am a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.  Nothing dramatic, just simply following step by step!

3. You are not a grasshopper.  You are so much more then you think you are!  You are more!  God has great plans for you!

4. Be the person who God has actually designed you to be.  Stop trying to be someone else!

5. Live in the fullness of our identity in Christ and live in the fullness of our potential. Remember Jeremiah 29:11.  God has great plans for us...plans to give us a hope and a future

6. Sometimes we stay in bondage because freedom seems too scary.   Get over it, move on, we're done!  All of us have junk and baggage that holds us down.  Drop it at the feet of Jesus and move on into an incredible future

7. Moses you servant is dead.  You can not move on into the "Promise land" that God has planned for you when you keep on holding onto your past, no matter how good or bad that past was in your life....move on!

8. When you bash the church you bash the bride of Christ.  No church is perfect.  Churches are made up of dirty, filthy sinners who are trying their best to follow, love and serve the Lord. If you are unhappy in the church you are attending, find another body of believers to join.  The easiest thing to move is your church letter!

9.  Unless you are willing to serve in the unseen, God will not raise you up to a position or platform.  Be willing to work in someones shadow. and serve others before you are go and stand in the spotlight

10.  Keep this book of the law and the word of God always on your lips.  It is not about what such and such speaker, teacher or preacher says, but it is about what the inerrant, infallible WORD of GOD says!

The not so perfect quiet time

When I was single and in my twenties, I used to have epic quiet times.   I had graduated from both a Christian College and a Christian Seminary (are you impressed yet?) and I just knew that the only way God was going to bless my days was if I had forty five minute to an hour quiet time.  If I did not perfectly fill in all the blanks in my Bible study, somehow my day would be wrecked!

Now as a mom of a six year old and a two year old, having that managed morning quiet time can be a little bit challenging.  Yet, I know that if I do not start my day in prayer and Bible study (even if just for a few minutes), that chaos will ensue in both my heart and in my home.  There are days that the girls stay in their beds all through the night and I wake up refreshed at the beeping of my alarm clock, when I do have those great, 30-45 minute quiet times.  Then there are mornings when the night before was rough and the morning rush begins a little too early, when my quiet time consists of reading one or two quick Bible verses and says a brief prayer.

Two resources that have really helped me is getting a daily email devotion from  IF:Equip and Christine Caine.
You too can receive the emails at
1. IF: Equip     http://www.ifequip.com/
2. Christine Caine  http://www.christinecaine.com/

I know that everyone has their opinions on who are their favorite speakers and writers.  For me at the stage in my life, these two resources are both challenging and encouraging.

Let me encourage you try to start you day with even just a few minutes with the Lord!  You will be surprised how much better you will be grounded throughout your day.

Psalms 5:11-12

"But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy.
Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name
may rejoice in you.
Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with

your favor as with a shield."

I love Christmas! We do Christmas BIG at our house!  I love decorating my house, placin precious ornaments on our tree and carefully hanging up our stockings on our fireplace.  I love to dress my girls in matching footed Christmas pj's, to drive around and look at Christmas lights while sipping on hot chocolate.  I love how my girls are now old enough to help me set out and set up their own Fisher Price Nativity scene.  Of course they remember to put the wise me in a different place from the manager....because the wise men did not come see Jesus until he was home and was more like 2 1/2 years old.  They were not at the manager!

My most favorite Christmas tradition is gathering together with my extended family.  I love hanging out and hugging the necks of my grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles, cousins, my brother, sister in law and my niece and nephew.  We eat a delicious lunch made up of casseroles, salads and yummy desserts.  We watch the kids run around, ride on riding toys and make our hearts swell as we listen to them giggle over secret jokes.  It is a day full of laughter, joy, reminiscing, memory making and love.

Like everybody else's family ours is not perfect.  We have our flaws.  We have had hurts and failures.  We have lost jobs, moved to different states, dealt with hard changes, had our heart broken, said goodbye to love ones, but through it all we held each other tight.  We have also shared great joy and happiness with each other.  We have had weddings, new jobs, exciting opportunities, new houses bought and lots of babies born!  Through it all, we have clung to the truth of words from the old hymn, "On Christ the solid ROCK we stand, all other ground is sinking sand."  No matter if we are on the top of the mountain experiencing great joy  or the in the valley, struggling to get our footing, the true constant in my family's life is the love, power and grace of the LORD, JESUS CHRIST!  In the days and moments when life is tough we cling to the Lord and on the days and moments when life is grand, we give thanks to the Lord.

As much as I love all the fun of Christmas.  I love the ONE we celebrate on Christmas even more!!

Happy New Years 2015!

To Cherish. "protect, care, love, hold dear, keep one in mind."

I have just one New Years resolution for 2015. It comes down to one word.

                                                      CHERISH.

  • I will cherish Adam.

  • I will cherish Ava.

  • I will cherish Anna

  • I will cherish my family

  • I will cherish my friends.

  • I will cherish "my people"

  • I will cherish my church

  • I will cherish each hard and happy experience I have during this year

Adam and I have been married almost nine years.  We do not have the perfect marriage, we dont live a fairy tale, we live a real life.  We have hard times, but we have much more good times then bad times.  I love doing life with my funny, hardworking, sometimes annoying, handsome husband.  I am really glad I married him in 2006 and I look forward to many more years of marriage, as we laugh and love together.

Ava and Anna are six and two,  I can not believe it.  Where did the time go?  I feel like it was just yesterday when I was running on three hours of sleep because of middle of the night feedings and walking around with spit up permanently on my shirt.  There are days that are so long, I feel like I will never get to bedtime.  I am reminded that the days may be long, but the years are short.

My family means the world to me.  They have supported and encouraged me in every fun and frustrated moments of my life.  At this point in my life I am enjoying an adult relationship with them.  The thought of not having them around for the next 100 years makes my heart tighten in my chest.  This year I have had several of my friends that have had to bury their parents.  WHAT?  We are all just in our late thirties or early forties...it seems too soon to be helping my friends through the grief of loosing a parent.

"There is a friend that sticks closer then a brother"  I have friends that I have known since I was two.  I have elementary school friends,  I have middle school friends, I have high school friends and I have friends that we went to all three together.  I have camp friends.  I have college and seminary friends.  I have Woodstock, Acworth, Kennesaw, Marietta friends.  I am so very blessed to have friends that are like family and family that are my friends.  We have gone to prom together, stood with each other in ugly bridesmaid dresses, and held each others babies in our arms.  We have celebrated together, we have cried and laughed together, we have prayed together and walked beside each other during the very worst and the very best times of each others lives.

My people, the people God has put in my life that teach and coach my children, the ones I see at the gym, at the grocery store, the people I do life with. My church, a place that is like my second home. A place I go to be encouraged, to be challenged, to be loved, they are my "faith family".

There are experiences that make me want to laugh.  Experiences that have made me rejoice. Experiences that have made me want to cry and other times that have made me mad.  Yet each experience has molded me and made me into the woman I am today.  May I make the most of each moment I am given in this year, in 2015.

I want to cherish.

 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Back to blogging!!

I know, I know!  It has been over a year since I have blogged!  The only excuse I can say, is that life just got in the way...which is really why I wanted to started blogging in the first place.  To blog about our life, our REAL LIFE!  There are times I will blog about great things happening in our lives.  For example, the excitement of my girls starting school!!  My oldest started kindergarten and my littlest starting preschool!

My biggest Ava walking to her first day of kindergarten.  Lots of tears on my part!

My littlest, Anna starting her first day of preschool

I will also blog about how even the best laid out plans fall apart, like when we tried to take a family picture!  Here is one that was taken at the end of the photo session, and has become one of my favorites.

I will also be blogging on the hard times of life,  the stresses of daily life and the things God is teaching me as a wife, mother, daughter and friend.  I hope that as you read this blog that you will be encouraged to love God and love others.  I am an imperfect Daughter of the King, that desires to serve God in every season of my life and to show love, compassion and authenticity to those around me!

2 Samuel 7:18

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:
“Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?

Called into "The Ministry"

In the last few days, a college friend of mine, in fact my old cheerleading partner was posting about his time preaching at a local camp.  Now this is not any local camp, this is THE CAMP (Marietta Baptist Camp) that I pretty much grew up going.  I started in the 3rd grade as a camper, at 15 I got to be an LIT (Leader in Training) and from 19-22, I was on staff as a counselor and program director.

While looking at some of my friend, who was the camp pastor for the week's, pictures and videos, a flood of memories came back to me.  One very important memory came back to me.  It was the day that I felt God calling me into the ministry, completely and whole heartedly surrendering my life and specifically my career to the Lord. The date was July 5, 1996.  I was sitting in the second seat in the second row of the camp chapel.  It was as if SOMEONE (God), tapped me on the shoulder with his Heavenly finger and said, "HEY YOU"!  In my heart and I really think a little out loud I said, "YES, Lord" Since I grew up as a good Baptist, and going to Sunday School for 19 years, I knew from the story of Samuel and Eli, to say Yes and ask questions later!  In His calm, but strong voice He said, "I want your life, your career, I want to be in the driver's seat of your life, and lead and guide you no mater what or where."  Being the young and naive nineteen year old that I was, I pretty much figured that God was going to ask me to either be a missionary or a pastor's wives.

Fast forward seventeen years later, at the age of 36, I can tell you that I am neither a missionary nor a Pastors wife.  Though I have been on some mission trips and in my college, seminary and single days, I did date some pastors!!    Even though I have a Bachelors and Masters in Christian Education and have been on several church staffs, my perspective on "ministry" has changed a little bit.  God has taken me on quite a journey these last few years since God took a chance on me that July day.  In my twenties I had some great and not so great experiences as a church staff member.  Then towards my late twenties I still was a paid staff person in ministry, I was just on staff at a Christian School and not a church.  Then God chose to ripped the training wheels off my "standard issue, I can handle it myself" ministry experience.

It all began when my husband (who is by the way not a pastor nor a missionary!), decided we wanted to start a family.  As good little Christians, we wanted to "increase and multiply"!  Yet, the whole having a family, starting a family thing took us a little bit more effort, and a little bit more time then I would have liked. In fact it took us about two years of medication, treatments and many tears in order to become pregnant.  Yet through that experience, God has openned amazing doors for me to minister to other women (and some men too) that have endured the journey of infertility.  Not as a paid staff person, but as fellow journeyer on this windy Christian walk.  Then after going through the joys of infertility to become pregnant with our first daughter, she decided she was done cooking and wanted out of me at a mere 30 weeks.  Again God thrust me into an area of ministry that I never would have chosen for myself, or was even prepared to handle.  Through my daughters early arrival, struggle to reach her milestones and some on going development issues, God has allowed me to meet, mingle and minister to people that I my path would not otherwise cross.  Now as a thirty-six year old, married, stay at home mom of two preschoolers (one 4 and one almost 7 months), God has me in yet another ministry job.  My job now is to be the Bible teacher, meal making, laundry doing, poop cleaning, play date planner, and so on and so on for two of the cutest blue eyed babies!

So to bring this rambling to an end, I write all of this to say that as a Christian we are ALL called to ministry. Whether you are on staff of a mega church, a small country church, a missionary, a teacher, a mentor or a mom, God has placed YOU into a specific position, that HE ALONE has called, cultivated and created.  Be encouraged, "He who began a good work in you will carry it out to completion!" (Philippians 1:6)

My Incredible Interrupted Life

A few months ago I had the opportunity speak our church's women's event.  The below is the message that I gave to the ladies.  I pray that it will encourage you as you journey on in life.

In our ladies Bible study we have recently gone through the study, Jonah, “A life Interrupted”. It really dove into the story of Jonah, and how he was a good, little follower of God, until God decided to interrupt his perfectly planned lifeThe study hit home and showed me how God has done such an amazing, incredible, gracious, interrupted, hard, tear-filled, restoring work in my life, and I would like to share a little bit of that story with you tonight.

Just to give you a little back ground, I grew up in a simi-small town, with incredible parents who have just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and one very over protective big brother.  I was taken to church on Sunday mornings, Sunday nights and Wednesday nights from the time I was still in my mommy’s tummy!  Through that exposure to the things of Christ at an early age, I asked Jesus into my heart and became a Christian at the age of 8.  I was a very good, little Christian, Southern Baptist girl, who pretty much followed all the rules, didn’t get into too much trouble, read my Bible, tithed, went to church camp.  The worst thing I did was kiss boys at youth camp!   My view of God and the Christian life was, if you did all the right things, and followed all “the rules”, then good stuff would be given to you and your life would be relatively smooth.  On the other hand, if you did bad things, or broke any of “the rules”, then bad things would happen to you and your life with not go smoothly! To be honest that logic had pretty much be true in my life.  That logic was about to be changed and challenged as I entered into college, and the reality of WHO God is, was taught to me through a string of “life interruptions”!!

When I was a freshman in college several of my friends and I sat around one afternoon, and instead of studying we talked about what we thought our future would look like!  As we went around and talked, I said my future looked something like this.  My first two years of college I would have fun then in about my junior year I would meet the man I would marry, we would date, get married after graduation, move back to my hometown of Greenville, Sc and then have 2 to 4 children.  I really think at that moment God probably about feel off His throne laughing!!  I can picture Him now looking over at Gabriel and saying, “Oh that sweet girl, doesn’t know the journey she is about to take!”

My plan seemed to be going just the way I wanted it to go.  The summer after my sophomore year I met and started dating this great Christian guy, and we continued to date through my Senior and after graduation.  After over two years of dating I was sure an engagement was right around the corner.  Yet, that was not God’s plan.  Instead, after two and half years of dating, “Mr. Wonderful” dumped me by an email!  No face to face, no phone call…just an email!   What’s sort of funny or ironic is that one of my favorite verses and a verse I hold onto as one of my life verses is Ephesians 2:10 which states, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which HE prepared in advance for us to do!” Me getting dumped by “Mr Perfect” ,was just  the first of the interruptions that God used in my life to grow me, shape me and show me the path that HE HAD created for me!
As I was mending my broken heart, I felt led to continue my education and started my studies at Seminary.  Not only did I know, that a seminary degree would be a great addition to my resume, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt my chances of getting married, if I went to a school the was 70 percent guys and 30 percent girls!!  During my time in Seminary, I was given the opportunity to complete an internship at First Baptist Woodstock.  From the moment, I started the internship, I  felt at home.  It was such my desire to have a career at FBCW.  Even though the internship was great, there was not a position open for me, at the time, so back to seminary I went!  A few months before I was set to graduate, FBCW offered me a job!  Even though it was not moving back to Greenville, SC that I thought I wanted, God used a “divine interruption” again, to open an even better door for me.

Now that I was working at the mega church, and giving myself and my life to the Lord in full time ministry, I knew that a husband was not far behind!  But God had a little bit more work to do in my life.  During the next 4 years I worked and ministered at FBCW,  During those 4 years I was a bridesmaid 10 times, as I watched my friends marry their prince charmings.  I was getting to the point that I was starting to think that maybe God wanted me to a Lottie Moon of my generation and destined to be single forever. Yet, God was about to “interrupt” my life, with a life changing, and name changing interruption.   One Tuesday night during our singles Bible study, a friend of mine decided to play match maker!  She walked into Bible Study and introduced me to one of her life long friends. That was the first time that I looked into the eyes of my precious, amazing, incredible husband Adam.  Just when I was done with guys and had given  up on my dream of being a wife and mother, God interrupted my life in the most wonderful way.  On our first date, Adam picked me up in his white explorer and proceeded to turn off the engine.  I started getting a little nervous, and just when I thought was going to be on episode of American’s most wanted, he asked me if we could pray before we went on the date.  I have no recollection of the prayer he prayed but the prayer I was praying was…PRAISE THE LORD, my prince has arrived.  Of course I did not tell him that is what I was thinking.  After just three short months of dating he told me he loved me and then ten months later on a hike up Kennesaw Mountain, he asked me to be his wife.  On March 25, 2006, I finally became a Mrs.  I became, Mrs. Adam Cooler!!  So finally after many interruptions in the form of ridiculous guys, I was finally married at the ripe old age at 29!! I was finally a wife!

Soon after Adam and I were married, we decided that we wanted to start to “try” to have children.  Since I had taken sixth grade science, I didn’t think it was going to take us too long to become pregnant!  I had knew that A plus B equals C…tada, we would be pregnant! Plus, I figured since I had kept my “true love waits” promise I had made in 6th grade, and I had to waited so long to get married, God somehow, “owed” me!   Well getting pregnant did not happen as quickly as I had hoped.  After trying for about six months on our own, I went to my OB and he gave me a little bit of medicine and said, that we would check and see how it was going, but he was sure that it would just take a few months of being on the medicine and we would be pregnant.  Yet, after 6 months, there was still no pregnancy.   So for the next 6-8 months, I was then sent to various of doctors, and was poked, prodded, had blood taken and x—rays done of my most private parts.  Still there was no pregnancy and really no reason why I was not getting pregnant.  By this point, I was getting frustrated, mad, sad, upset and questioning God’s plan and timing!! Finally, my doctor sent me to a specialist.  When we first met with them, I again got my hopes up.  We met with the doctor and he said he would need to rerun some of the test that I had already done, awesome, but that he should have a plan in motion in just a few weeks.  Soon it was decided that we would try the less invasive route of doing an IUI or Inuterine insemination with me and he felt 75% confident that it would work.  If you do not know what an IUI is, just think turkey basester.  The date was set for the procedure.  It happened that the date that was chosen was Mother’s day.  Well, of course I thought that was a sign from the Lord, that the procedure would work.  We went in for the procedure, it was quick and painless.  A few weeks later I went in to have my blood drawn to see if the procedure had worked and if I was finally pregnant.  On that day, after my blood was taken, I headed to one of my closest friends baby shower. I figured I would not get the results so soon and if I did, how fun would it be to share the news with all of my friends.  While, at the shower, my phone rang and it was the doctor’s office.  I quickly ran and answered it, just knowing the answer would be yes.  Well, the minute I heard the nurses voice I knew it was not good news.  She gently told me that the results were negative…I was not pregnant.  At that point I was devastated and just started crying hysterically.  Remind you, still at my friend’s baby shower.  At that point, I was shown just what amazing friends God has placed in my life.  They all jumped into action, getting me something to drink, hugging me, drying my eyes and helping me get to my car and home.  Once I got home, I just fell to the ground and sobbed.  I felt so broken hearted and honestly so very let down by the Lord.  With little strength I did have, I got my Bible, turned to the book of Psalms and just started reading them out loud.  One of the Psalms that I kept reading out loud was, Psalms 18:1-19  (READ PASSGE).  As I read that passage I just felt the Lord, over and over say two thing, “It’s going to be okay and soon and very soon!”
As I was getting back up off my face from praying to the Lord, a great friend of mine, Sarah called me and said, we were heading out to the lake to watch some wakeboard competition.  This might sound random and not “spiritual”, because I was facing a crisis, but sometimes when you are facing a heartbreaking, faith shaking time, you don’t need to hear one more Bible verse or one more quote from Beth Moore.  You just need a friend to support you and get your mind off of the experience!

A few weeks later, which just happened to be Father’s day this time….Awesome we went and tried the IUI again, hoping for a good outcome but really just following the doctor’s advice.  After waiting the three week waiting period Adam and I went and I had my blood drawn to see if  the procedure worked this time.  As we were driving back from the doctor’s office, in fact we were right at the intersection of 41 and 92, my phone rang.  The nurse barely got out the words, CONGRATULATIONS…before I was screaming and crying at the same time, and Adam had to pull off into a bank parking lot, because of all the tears in the car.  PRAISE THE LORD.  After 2  ½ years of pokes, prodding, prayers, tears and tantrums, God had answered our prayers.  He answered our prayers for a child and her name is Ava Elizabeth Cooler.  She is 3 ½ now, almost 4 and if you attend Cedarcrest you may see my little miracle in Elevate Jr every Sunday!!
Now Ava is not only a miracle because of how hard we had to “work” to conceive her, but she is a miracle all by herself because she decided to make her debut into the world, 10 weeks early at just 2 lbs and 14 ounces.  After spending 57 days in the NICU, and almost 4 years of weeks filled with OT, PT and Speech therapy, it is only by the amazing grace of God, that she has no vision, hearing or breathing issues and has caught up with her peers in her development.!!
Because of the dramatic experiences we had in both concieveing and  having Ava, we had pretty much decided that we were going to be an only child family.  We  thought about going through all the infertility treatments again and even looked into adopting, but I knew that I just was not emotionally recovered enough to endure the heartache that I may face with either option.  So we went on with our life.  We enjoyed family trips, lazy Saturdays and just each moment with the little family that God had given us.  At this point, Ava had turned 3 and I had turned 35, and we got into a groove with life and were moving on.  Again, I started putting my plan in motion, and started preparing to go back to work, thinking Ava would be in Kindergarten in about  2 years.  Then God again, decided to divinely interrupt my perfectly planned out life.  Soon after easter of this year, I started feeling like I was gaining weight and just did not feel like myself.  I just figured that is what happened when you turned 35.  We jointed the YMCA, I took kick boxing classes and swam almost every day, and also began trying to eat really healthy.  Still, I was feeling very tired and the weight was adding in up on me, not coming off!!  Finally, I went to Kroger and decided to buy a pregnancy test, just to “rule out” being pregnant, so I could start figuring out why I felt the way I felt.  Even as I was taking the test, I knew it was going to be negative.  Hadn’t I had 150 negative pregnancy tests when trying to conceive Ava.  Hadn’t I been told by my doctor, that there was NO WAY I could become pregnant on my own with our medical intervention.  Well, ladies my God is greater, higher, and then any doubt of mine and any doctor’s diagnosis.  Because even before the 3 minute waiting period was up, I look at the test and there, in bright pink was a positive sign!!  That positive sign will be born on December 5th and her name is Anna Mincey Cooler!!
God is great, amazing, powerful and full of grace and mercy.  As I close tonight, I just want you to remember one thing from my story and that is that God’s plan and is timing are perfect, even if sometimes they can be very painful!!  God has taught me through this amazing, incredible, interrupted life, that sometime the greatest blessings and his greatest gifts come from and through our darkest , and hardest times!!
